‘The UK has a world-leading position in offshore wind, with 40% of the operational offshore turbines around our shores.’ But China has been very busy during the pandemic and will soon overtake the UK’s booming offshore industry!
With the pandemic and the climate crisis still raging, China has been steadily building up its wind warms over land and sea. Despite Covid-19 grinding much of the world to a halt, China’s drive to conquer the global renewable energy market continues apace: it’s constructing more offshore wind capacity than the rest of the world combined.
According to Zhao,“Offshore is easy to transmit, the wind along the east coast and the industrial cities is well populated, it’s easy for energy consumption. The economy there is larger, meaning there is more money to be made. And you don’t need to build long electricity cables.” However, in some cases, over 20% of the energy being generated is going uncollected- a huge waste! Have China gone too far, perhaps?
Wind power is a fantastic form of greener energy! It’s extremely cost effective, it’s very sustainable and wind turbines can be built almost anywhere!
One, average, offshore wind turbine of 3.6 MW can power more than 3,312 average EU households meaning the whole of Guernsey could be powered by roughly 10 turbines!
To the west of Guernsey is a huge expanse of open sea, perfect for wind turbines?
